In full: "I have great pleasure in presenting you with my autograph." José Echegaray y Eizaguirre (1832-1916), the leading Spanish dramatist of the last quarter of the 19th century, was awarded the 1904 Nobel Prize for Literature (along with poet Frédéric Mistral) "in recognition of the numerous and brilliant compositions which, in an individual and original manner, have revived the great traditions of the Spanish drama." Also a mathematician and statesman, between 1867 and 1876, Echegaray held several posts in the revolutionary government that overthrew the monarchy, including serving in the Cortes, the Spanish Parliament. Resigning upon the restoration of the Bourbon dynasty, Echegaray would go on to acclaim as a dramatist, penning some 60 plays, half of them in verse. His works include La Esposa Del Vengador (1874), En Puño De La Espada (1875) and O Locura O Santidad (1877), which was translated into English in 1895, bringing international acclaim to the author. Influenced by the work of great Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen, Eschegary began exploring social issues in later plays such as El Hijo De Don Juan (1892) and El Gran Galeoto (The Great Galeoto, 1881), his best known work. Although Echegaray's plays were considered outmoded by the "Generation of 1898", the playwright had revolutionized Spanish drama, opening the way for such playwrights as Jacinto Benavente.
